With the official start of the new NFL league year under a week away, leaks have started to come out about re-signings, releases, and even trades. Lost in this shuffle of big moves, though, is the New Orleans Saints appearing set to keep Derek Carr and his abysmal $51.46 Million cap hit on the books for next season. The Saints, who have struggled since signing Carr 2 offseason ago, are in a brutal position after hiring Kellen Moore as their new HC.
Even with the release of Carr, they wouldn't have much cap flexibility to improve a roster in desperate need of an upgrade. They have an aging core, and though WR1 Chris Olave is young, he can't seem to stay on the field for extended periods of time. Going into the 2025-26 season, New Orleans will likely be one of the bottom feeders in the league.
The move to keep Carr is interesting, because the organization should look to free up as much space as possible where and whenever they can. Carr hasn't even been propelling the team forward, and one could even make the argument that he is holding them back. Should he have been released, though, he likely would have had a large market, mostly from teams looking for a veteran presence in the locker room, or as a bridge to hold them over as they continue on their search. The latter could be just what New Orleans is doing, however. It's a tough dilemma for the Saints, but it may just be a move they have to live with.
