The Bears struck gold this coaching cycle. After the long-awaited firing of Head Coach Matt Eberflus earlier this season spearheaded by a time management blunder, Chicago was once again in the market for a leader on the sidelines. Following an extensive search process, they were able to land the whale. Now former Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson was the most attractive prospect in each of the past two off-seasons, and this time he was ready to take a job.
The move was no doubt made in an attempt to bolster an offense led by #1 pick Caleb Williams. Since they hired Eberflus, GM Ryan Poles has actually done an excellent job of building a star-studded offensive front, but the talent hasn't exactly translated to success on the field. Johnson should be able to bring out the best in players such as DJ Moore and Rome Odunze as well as Williams, just as he did with literally every player on the Detroit offense.
Johnson has wasted no time filling in coordinator positions, hiring former Saints HC Dennis Allen as his defensive coordinator. Chicago's defense was solid, although inconsistent. It's the one thing I can most see Johnson struggle with early in his Head Coaching career. Johnson may need time to acclimate to the new gig, but hopes are high in Chicago.
