The MLB's Biggest Problem: Pitcher Elbow Injuries

        What do Spencer Strider, Gerrit Cole, Tony Gonsolin, Eury Perez, Shane McClanahan and Jacob deGrom all have in common? These star pitchers have all suffered severe elbow injuries, causing them to miss at least half of the season, and for some, the entire year. Recently, Atlanta Braves star pitcher Spencer Strider underwent UCL surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of the season (MLB.com). Earlier this season, Gerrit Cole of the red-hot New York Yankees suffered an elbow injury before the season started that has caused him to miss the opening months of the year. So why exactly are so many pitchers sustaining severe elbow injuries? One of the answers lies in the progression of pitch velocity and arm strength over the course of MLB history.

Detroit Tigers: The Intro

  The Detroit Tigers had a very eventful season last year. They showed potential and had some standout performances form some of their players. Miguel Cabrera continued to make history reaching the 3000th career hit milestone. Pitcher Tarik Skubal had a breakout season, demonstrating his potential as a top-notch pitcher. The tigers also had some promising rookies, like Spencer Torkelson, who made his mark on the lineup both up to bat and on the field. They were not expected to make the playoffs this season as it would likely be another growth and progress season. This goal was met however, as the Tigers have certainly capitalized on last season and are ready to a contender for the playoffs this season.

   After a long and painful playoff drought, the Philadelphia Phillies, under Manager Rob Thomson, made two straight postseasons, getting to the NLCS and World Series but never winning. This year, they look more ready than ever, returning a similar team from last year with improved starting pitching and bullpen depth.
