Grading the Jahan Dotson Trade

Last week, the Eagles made a move to acquire former first round pick and Penn State product Jahan Dotson from their in-division rival, the Washington Commanders. The decision was made with roster cut down days coming up, and while Dotson certsainly would've found his way into the 53 man squad, he wasn't a big enough contributor to put him into untouchable territory, and with Washington still likely well out of contention, there was no use in keeping him around.

Grading the move

Eagles: B+

The WR3/Slot position looked shaky for Philly behind stars AJ Brown + Devonta Smith, so the positional fit of homegrown Dotson is not the worry here. I think a 3rd round pick is steep for a player who has yet to show the same consistent success at the pro level that we saw in collge. Still, it isn;t too big of a risk considering they got a 5th rounder back as well, especially with Howie Roseman's drafting prowess. Last year, the WR3 in Philly (Olamide Zaccheaus) put up just 164 yards, slotting in at 6th on the team. And with Dallas Goedert and Kenneth Gainwell, 3rd and 5th, respectively, still around, coach Nick Sirianni won't need too much production out of Dotson to ensure team success. However, it would be a huge benifactor if Dotson could take some of the weight off the shoulders of Brown and Smith, and even Gainwell and Goedert. Overall, Dotson should fit in well for the Eagles, and will already be a fan favorite due to the overlap of Penn State fans in Philly.

Commanders: B

I don't love the idea of giving away a first round pick from 2 years ago who was a solid contributor to a perenially weak offense, but I understand the move from Washington. Moving away from Dotson shines an even brighter light on star Terry McClaurin, and gives a young guy like Dyami Brown and a slightly older guy in Olamide Zaccheaus a chance at a much bigger role moving forward. This year for Commanders receivers is essentially a tryout to be on the future WR core for Jayden Daniels. Expect a lot of 2 WR sets from Washington with rotating pieces at the second position. It is also important to note that they have a capable runner in Brian Robinson Jr. and a proven veteran receiving back in Austin Ekeler that can help in the passing game as well. The TE position isn't great, although they do have seasoned veteran at the position with Zach Ertz. The pass catchers won't be great, but it certainly isn't the worst.
