Debate: Should we be Done with the 90s?

Published on 18 March 2024 at 10:14

A large trend in the basketball community right now is the idea that we should stop giving respect to the 90s of the NBA and stop making comparisons of players. This argument has two pretty clear sides that I am going to try to break down for you today.

Side 1: The 1990s Period of the NBA Is No Where Near As Good As Today.

The NBA both now and in the 1990s was extremely entertaining, but the NBA now is much more talented. The talent levels are through the roof, the stars being some of the most explosive and exhilarating players in the world. At this point, we have players like Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who are multi-level scorers and can play-make extremely well, and both of them would be dominating the 90s like no other era. Although the 90s are more physical, that does not make the era inherently better. Today, defense is the best it has ever been, and the only reason scoring is so high is because of the talent levels and the shooting ability almost every single NBA player has. If Michael Jordan played today, he would be no where near as good as he was in the 1990s.

Side 2: The 1990s Period is one of the most entertaining and the best basketball the NBA has ever seen

With star Michael Jordan leading the bulls, and Hakeem and the Rockets staying strong for a two-peat, tis aggressive form of basketball is undoubtably the best all-around of all time. The defense was the best, the aggression every player had keeping high energy through every single possession and game. You couldn't put anyone from this day and age in the 90s and see them have success, and if you were to put Michael Jordan in today's game, you would see a level of dominance unseen by anyone. Although shooting wasn't better, the low scoring games were not the result of bad offense but good defense.
