Top Candidates for NBA Rookie of the Year

Published on 22 March 2024 at 10:22

In the NBA, rookies are rarely ever true stars. However, they are the future of the NBA, and it is important to note their accomplishments. From the most anticipated player in the last few decades to others who initially flew under the radar, this draft class is pact with exciting talents. The 2023-2024 season has showcased some exceptional performances and has made this year’s Rookie of the Year award more contested than some may think.

Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama’s polished skill and overwhelming size has led many to believe that he will become a generational talent. Fans across the country watched, eager to see a player of that caliber dominate. Wemby’s offensive abilities are rare for a guy his size. For example, he is very coordinated and can handle the ball well. However, his defense is what stands out in my eyes. He has made some of the top players in the league struggle as they faced up against him. With his clear mix of defense and offence, Victor Wembanyama is the front runner for this years Rookie of the year award. But there are other players that can certainly take the award.

Chet Holmgren

Despite being picked up in the 2022 draft, Chet Holmgren still qualifies for this season’s Rookie of the Year award. Coming off an injury, Holmgren is having an exciting season. Chet has been a sniper from behind the arch and has put up some of the most blocks in the league. His handle has also been impressive and especially useful in transition. Overall, Chet Holmgren has been a key player in a thriving OKC team and is certainly a leading candidate for this year's Rookie of the Year.

Brandon Miller

Heading into this season, Brandon Miller was certainly left in the shadow of Victor Wembanyama. However, he has proved to be a fantastic scorer and could make a lasting impact on this league. Notably, Miller put up a whopping 35 points against the Indiana Pacers and averaging 14 points per game. His three-point shooting has been his main strong suit, shooting 40% on around 5 attempts per game. Although the Charlote Hornets are struggling, Brandon Miller can help this team find success in the future. While he may not be a front-runner for the award, there is definitely a strong case to be made in his favor.
