Trust the Process? A Guide Through the Sixers' Offseason

After a long and in the end disappointing 6 game series against the Knicks that felt like 10 games, the Philadelphia 76ers bowed out early of the NBA playoffs yet again. This one stings, as they ended with a better FG, 3 Point, and free throw percentage than the Knicks despite losing. However, there are several positives coming away from it, starting with their high cap space and ability to sign a true superstar thanks to the impending departure of franchise legend Tobias Harris.

The Process: Step 1: Find a PF

Paul George? Nico Batum? LeBron? No matter who they sign, they have to make sure they get it right, because it is sure to be a deal near or at the max, which they have one slot available for from Tobias Harris. After the Harris signing, Daryl Morey cannot afford another big mistake at the position. There will be several big names out in free agency, and Morey's main job is to sign the one who fits in with Maxey and Embiid. If all goes right, best *realistic* case scenario is Paul George, who would give the team good two sided play and another great option if Maxey and Embiid are out.

The Process: Step 2: Backcourt depth

Ever since their trade for James Harden that involved sending Andre Drummond to the Nets, the Sixers have struggled to find a true center to back up Embiid. DeAndre Jordan showed his age when given minutes, Montrezl Harrell was fine, but got beat out by  Reed when injured and never recovered, and Paul Reed - the backup this season, was simply to small and uncoordinated as he constantly got outrebounded by Isaiah Hartenstein and Mitchell Robinson. Whoever they sign will be a huge piece to the puzzle, as he will allow Embiid to play less minutes during the regular season, ensuring that he is 100% come playoff time and able to carry the team the way we often see throughout the year. Andre Drummond is set to become a free agent again this offseason, and as long as he is not retired, the Sixers should make a huge push to bring him back.

The Process: Step 3: Get a contributor in the first round

In the past couple of drafts the Sixers have had a first round selection in, they have been known to select project prospects when they are clearly in win now mode (ex: Jaden Springer, Zhaire Smith, and Furkan Korkmaz). This year, with the #16 overall pick, they need to be sure to select a player who is able to come in and get bench minutes right way. With that rookie presence, not only will they get extra positive contributions, but they will be able to grow their prospect through in game, important minutes. With the right pick, this team could get itself another star as they head towards the end of Joel Embiid's prime and the start of Tyrese Maxey's.

It's not the end of the franchise. This team could come back next year and win a championship. But the lack of good play without Joel Embiid in the regular season hurt them, as they were forced into the play-in and had a tough matchup against the Knicks in the first round. Overall, fans should be happy with the fight they put up and look forward to a pivotal, cornerstone offseason that could shape the organization for years to come.
