South Bracket Breakdown

Published on 20 March 2024 at 08:05

The South Region of the bracket is home to 1 seeded Houston - a team that was the no doubt #1 overall seed until the end of champ week. Because of their loss in the Big 12 final, they will have to fight through a much tougher bracket if they want to make it to the final 4. Teams in their way include CBB powerhouses Kentucky and Duke, as well as 2 seeded Marquette.

Round 1

1 Houston vs. 16 Longwood

8 Nebraska vs. 9 Texas A&M: I have Nebraska prevailing against an inconsistent A&M team

4 Duke vs. 13 Vermont

12 James Madison vs. 5 Wisconsin: For the first major upset of this region, I have a JMU team with one of the best records in the country knocking out a weaker 5 seed in Wisconsin.

6 Texas Tech vs. 11 NC State: Tech stays strong and beats an NC State squad that we never saw play good consistent basketball until the last possible minute.

3 Kentucky vs. 14 Oakland

10 Boise State/Colorado vs. 7 Florida: I do not really know who will win this first four game, but either one can easily handle Florida

15 Western Kentucky vs. 2 Marquette: Call me crazy, but in recent years, a 15 seed has prevailed in March. Western Kentucky's play combined with Marquette's inconsistency will make the Golden Eagles the first 2 seed to exit this time around.

Round 2

1 Houston vs. 8 Nebraska

4 Duke vs. 12 James Madison

6 Texas Tech vs. 3 Kentucky: This Kentucky team is so young and so inexperienced that even against a lesser team, they are always at high risk of losing, and that is exactly what I have happening here.

10 Boise State/Colorado vs. 15 Western Kentucky: In a joke of a game, one team from the first four will move on to play Texas Tech

Sweet 16

4 Duke vs. 1 Houston: A team like Duke can always go far, and Houston losing in the Big 12 final - even to a good team - scares me too much to put them farther.

6 Texas Tech vs. 10 Boise State/Colorado: The college basketball gods reward Texas Tech for beating Kentucky, giving them an easy game before a rough Duke matchup.

Elite 8

4 Duke vs. 6 Texas Tech: Duke makes their way back to the final 4 for the millionth time, completing an improbable run where they played 3 seeds 6th or higher, but it doesn't get easier from here.
