Will Patrick Mahomes Ever Catch Up to Tom Brady?

Published on 16 February 2024 at 14:42

With Superbowl LVIII having wrapped up and the Chiefs keeping their crown as the reigning champions, arguments have arose on whether Patrick Mahomes will ever catch Tom Brady and his undisputed G.O.A.T status, and there is most definitely something to be said for that. So, to break down both sides of the story, I will explain the reasoning behind both opinions.

Side A: Mahomes will never touch Brady when it comes to greatness.

With this argument, there is a lot of truth.  First of all, many argue that Mahomes has had a most successful beginning of his career compared to Brady in the early 2000s. However, while Mahomes does boast 3 Super bowls in 7 years, Tom Brady did hit that same 3 Superbowl benchmark in the lesser time of 5 years, also boasting a back-to-back campaign as well. Furthering this argument, Tom Brady proved the strong matter of longevity, staying in the argument for MVP and best quarterback from the early 2000s to the 2021 season, winning 7 Super bowls, making it to the Superbowl 10 times, and winning countless of awards and selections, being a 3 time MVP, a 15 time pro-bowler, and a six time All-Pro Team member. In the end, Tom Brady led one of the most praised and remembered careers in all of sports, and defends his title of "Greatest of All Time" very well.

Side B: Mahomes will be pass Brady in the next 10-15 years.

When it comes to this side of the argument, anyone can see the large amount of recency bias which supports it. Yes, Mahomes has had an extremely successful beginning of his career, anyone can see how this success will most likely not last forever. Seen in many great sport careers, early success does not mean it will never end. The example being Kobe Bryant, while he dominated the NBA for a three-peat of titles, he proceeded to have a 7 or 8 year hiatus of above-average team play. However, this argument is not inherently wrong. With how the league looks at this point, the Chiefs very well could win more Super bowls in the upcoming years, and maybe Patrick Mahomes will eventually pass Brady and take the crown of G.O.A.T. However, only time will tell.

In the end, the debate of Patrick Mahomes vs Tom Brady is a heated one, with the newer generations of football fans leaning on the recent Chiefs success, while older fans are heavily defending what they witnessed during the Patriots dynasty. However, both football players are some of the best we have ever seen, and both sides should be grateful of what they get to witness unfold today.
